Spatial evidence begins with a position. Keep that position attached to every description, image and interpretation.
Let your eyes adapt
Pause after entering a darker or brighter room before judging color and detail. Human vision adjusts while a phone may immediately raise shadows or reduce highlights. Record the transition and avoid using the first automatic exposure as evidence of surface condition.
Find the brightest plane
Identify whether light falls on the object, label, case interior, wall or circulation route. Brightness establishes a visual hierarchy even when the most illuminated element is not the largest. Describe the arrangement before connecting it to curatorial intent.
Separate source and reflection
Ceiling fixtures, windows, case strips and illuminated screens produce different reflections. Move laterally within the allowed route to see whether a bright line belongs to the object or the glass. Keep an unedited master; retouching a reflection can also erase a real contour.
Do not sample museum color
White balance, lamp spectrum, glass tint, paint and screen settings all alter apparent hue. A visitor photograph cannot establish pigment, stone or metal composition. Use collection and technical records for material claims, and label digital color adjustments in the image manifest.
Read shadow as missing information
A dark side may contain modeled detail that the installation does not reveal from the public route. Do not describe it as plain, unfinished or damaged. Mark the surface as visually unresolved and seek official multi-view photography where available.
Protect the atmosphere and the record
A dramatic exposure can communicate the encounter while losing label text and object edges. Make a context frame for atmosphere and a separate, conservative evidence frame where photography rules permit. Do not blend exposures without disclosure.
Observe daylight change
Windows and skylights can alter a room by hour and season, while conservation controls may use blinds or filters. Date and time your observation. One luminous photograph should not become a permanent claim about how a gallery or object normally appears.
Caption the lighting condition
Name visible light sources, glare, shadowed surfaces and major adjustments. Link material and color descriptions to responsible records rather than pixels. This preserves the distinction between display illumination, photographic rendering and the physical object.
Check the label under the same light
A label and its object may receive very different illumination. Record whether the text is readable from the normal route and whether screen brightness or a phone light would disturb others or violate rules. Never use flash unless explicitly permitted. Transcribe key identifiers later from an official record when the gallery view is insufficient.
Keep display and conservation distinct
Low illumination may relate to conservation, atmosphere, architecture or several constraints together. A visitor observation cannot diagnose the reason or the condition of an object. Phrase the visible fact narrowly, then use museum or conservation sources for light-sensitive materials, exposure policies and technical interpretation.
Audit the published view
Before release, open the page at phone and desktop widths and compare the web crop with the parent frame. Confirm that the standing point, case edge, neighboring object or doorway needed by the argument remains visible. Check alt text, credit, date and source link together. Test the link from a related page so the note also makes sense outside its original sequence. The layout should help readers inspect the spatial relationship, not convert a carefully documented view back into an attractive but context-free object photograph.
A visitor view can document a current display relationship. It cannot by itself establish original context, object identity, material, date, curatorial intention or permanent location.
